General Questions
1) Can I play any song I want?
Not right now, but eventually yes. Our vision is for JamLegend to be the place where you can play any song you desire.

For right now, only artists who have agreed to be on the JamLegend platform are available. If you know of some artists who would be interested in the platform, please tell them (comment on their blogs, e-mail them, send them snail mail) to get onto JamLegend and have them e-mail artists@jamlegend.com.
2) I really want an invite! When will this be out of beta?
We've open our beta, so you don't need an invite anymore!
3) Do I need to buy a plastic guitar?
No. JamLegend is free! As long as you have access to the internet and have a keyboard, you can play JamLegend. You can play on a laptop (Chill Style) or you can flip a your keyboard (Jam Style)!

Here are the steps to playing Jam Style:
A) flip your keyboard forward with the keys facing the screen
B) curl your fingers around the 1,2,3,4 keys with the palm of your hand holding the back of the keyboard (just like the frets on a guitar)
C) hit the enter key with your thumb (just like strumming a guitar)

Remember you can hold the keys while you strum to get better accuracy.

Some of our player say they have used plastic guitars, but we think playing with the keyboard is good enough.
4) Will you be adding more instruments?
Yes. We're planning on adding keyboard, drums, bass, and (due to popular request)... cowbell. You will be able to play as a team with your friends and literally "jam" online against others. Expect to see those in the next few months.
5) What genres of music do you have?
For right now, we've been primarily approached by artists in Rock and Alternative and have their music on JamLegend. We do, however, plan to incorporate music of all genres as word of our service gets out.
6) What are ladder points? How do I earn them?
Ladder points show the skill of players on JamLegend. Top players on JamLegend generally have the most ladder points of the community.

You earn ladder points simply by playing song. You will often see a goal score set for you when you play a song, if you beat your goal you will earn more ladder points. If you dont, you will lose some.
7) How do I play JamLegend?
JamLegend is a music based rhythm game. The core concept involvs pressing keys on your keyboard in rhythm to the song that is playing. Notes come down the screen to indicate which keys to press, and when. With guitar you push down virtual frets (keys 1-5) and strum by pushing ENTER. Once you are signed up for the game you can try out the tutorial for a more detailed explanation.

Follow these easy steps to get yourself ready to play JamLegend:

A. At the top right, click the Sign Up link. Fill out the required fields to create yourself a JamLegend Account.

B. After registering a new account, you can start playing immediately. Cick on the featured song(s) on the homepage or click on Songs to browse the popular songs on JamLegend, and then choose choose a difficulty.

C. Follow the instructions to play either Chill Style (with your keyboard laying down) or Jam Style (with your keyboard flipped). Click Start Playing when you're ready to jam your heart out!

You may receive an invitation from a friend to play a JamLegend Showdown with you, just paste that URL into your browser, and (if you have an account) you'll be ready to play!
Artist Questions
1) I'm an artist, how do I get my work on JamLegend?
If you're an artist, you can use our platform to promote your music in a fun engaging way. Please send us the following at artists@jamlegend.com:
  • The genre of your work
  • A short paragraph describing you
  • A sample of your work - a MySpace page, link to website, or MP3 will do
2) Do you pay artists who use your platform?
Right now, we do not pay artists because we're just a small startup that is focused on providing the best service available.

Most bands that end up on music games get huge publicity boosts, which helps them sell more albums, book out more concerts, and become the stars they've been working so hard to be. But only select bands have been lucky enough to be chosen for those games. We're willing to risk changing the landscape so all artists can get that publicity boost (a JamLegend effect, if you will). For right now, we think that's compensation enough.

We eventually will work out a model for all artists to be able to promote their music, distribute their material, and be duly compensated. So, we encourage all artists to not be deterred by this point because we have that end-goal in mind.
